Axopar 29 Sun Top: Adventure Bound

Captain's Report by Capt. Ken Kreisler

Axopar 29 Sun Top running

Her dynamic profile is a mere indication of what awaits once aboard the Axopar 29 Sun Top.

For those of you who, like me, suffer from terminal wanderlust, you might find a solution to your malady by getting your hands on the wheel of the Axopar 29 Sun Top. She is as exciting to drive as she is to look at.

After input from its owner base, Axopar decided to allow for more refinements, improvements and enhancements without losing any of the core values the company has stood on for over a decade: Pride in craftsmanship, living the adventure, safety and continuous innovation — making it one of the fastest-growing builders in the industry with 100+ dealers in 55+ countries.

On the safety issue, the Axopar 29 Sun Top is rated B-Ocean and C-Coastal. This means she is built to navigate offshore, no more than 200 miles and she can tolerate winds up to Force 8, 39-46 mph/34-40 kts and waves up to 13+ feet. Her Coastal rating indicates she is built to navigate inshore, including lakes, rivers and bays, with up to Force 6 wind, 25-31 mph/22-27 kts and sea states up to 6+ feet. While any prudent skipper would never venture out in such conditions, it’s good to know you have a boat underfoot that can.

Bolstered Pilot and Co-pilot seats can swivel and slide.

The helm has plenty of room for the twin 12" screens, with controls, tactile switches, bow thruster, trim tabs and VHF all within easy reach. Note the sturdy build on the hardtop supports.

Aft Section

The Axopar 29 Sun Top is full of surprises and with several options for this area of the boat, she can be equipped for any owner’s needs. And besides the standard open deck aft, there are three exciting options to choose from with the cockpit table, seating/sunpad space already viewed being the first.

Axopar 29 Sun Top 2x200-hp Mercury outboards

While our boat was outfitted with a pair of 200-hp Mercury outboards, you can opt for singles in either 300- or 400-hp ratings. The tow bar is an option and those cushioned compartments to either side have storage compartments beneath.

An additional large storage compartment can be found just aft of the cockpit seating area.

Axopar 29 Sun Top optional wet bar

As this rendering depicts, the optional wet bar is situated aft of a row of seats which have replaced the dining table.

Axopar 29 Sun Top aft cabin

One of the most exciting options here in the aft section is this cabin, accessed from a ram-assisted hatch. When in the closed position, the hatch can do double duty as an extra-large sunpad.

Performance

Our Axopar 29 Sun Top was powered by a pair of 200-hp Mercury 4-Stroke V6 outboards which seemed a perfect match for her twin stepped, 22° sharp-entry, V hull. On test day, we recorded an air temp of 82°, with relative humidity at 74%, wind between 5-10 knots, four people on board, 60% fuel and an approximate displacement of 7,428 pounds. Our top speed, turning 5700 rpm was 50.3 mph with a fuel burn of 32.2 gph.

Axopar 29 Sun Top running

She proved to be highly responsive to the helm and easily handled a series of s-turns and other maneuvers meant to test her mettle and showed what she is capable of: Providing an exciting day out on the water that will hopefully, turn yours in an adventurous time well spent.

Summary

The Axopar 29 Sun Top brings another dimension to the adventure boat market by adding class, luxury, and exciting performance. She utilizes only the latest in construction techniques and, as with all of the company’s builds, is rock-solid. With her outstanding out-of-the-box features, comfortable and upscale amenities, along with a select list of impressive options, she’s the kind of boat guaranteed to fill in the missing spaces. Decidedly not for every boater’s likes or needs, the Axopar 29 Sun Top stands apart from the others in her class and size and in doing so, makes a definite, and positive, statement of ownership.

If you’re just getting into boating and are looking for something a bit different, something to set you apart from the others, or are a veteran mariner and have somewhat satisfied your second mid-life crisis with the new Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Maserati, it may be high time you get aboard the exciting Axopar 29 Sun Top, grab the wheel and take her out on a sea trial. Then, judge for yourself. She just might be the right nautical cure for what ails you.
